{"id":765,"date":"2020-01-12T23:13:15","date_gmt":"2020-01-13T09:13:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/christianhomeschoolersofhawaii.org\/?page_id=765"},"modified":"2022-08-10T22:15:56","modified_gmt":"2022-08-11T08:15:56","slug":"how-much-instruction-time-is-needed-to-teach-my-children-at-home","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/mail.christianhomeschoolersofhawaii.org\/index.php\/how-much-instruction-time-is-needed-to-teach-my-children-at-home\/","title":{"rendered":"How much instruction time is needed?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><strong>How much instruction time is needed to teach my children at home?<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>Now that\u2019s a good question.\u00a0 As homeschool parents, we may have envisioned \u201cdoing school\u201d as sitting with our children on the sofa or around the kitchen table.\u00a0 If we were products of the public school or any brick and mortar institution, our recollection of school was sitting at a desk.\u00a0 And with the pressures to have our children do well, our homeschool often takes on \u201cschool at home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When our family began homeschooling, we read some insightful \u201cgetting started\u201d information that changed our view of \u201cdoing school.\u201d\u00a0 Before I share what we learned, I did some additional research and found several other authors who validated what we had learned years ago.<\/p>\n<p>So be prepared to ease up a bit on yourself and your young children.<\/p>\n<p>First, as you probably know, the Chapter 12 Rule Compulsory Attendance Exceptions, which includes the homeschool law in Hawaii, requires parents to keep \u201ca record of the number of hours per week the child spends in instruction\u201d (<a href=\"\/w\/index.php\/hawaii-homeschooling-rule\/#8-12-15\">8-12-15<\/a>).\u00a0 The law does not require a specific number of hours of instruction.\u00a0 That gives parents some leeway.\u00a0 (Praise the Lord for those homeschool pioneers to worked with the Board of Education to leave the number of hours to the discretion of the parents.)<\/p>\n<p>That being said, what is a good rule of thumb for the number of hours of instruction?<br \/>\nKindergarten \u2013 30 minutes of structured instruction<br \/>\nThen add 30 minutes every year thereafter.\u00a0 So it would look something like this:<br \/>\n1<sup>st<\/sup> grade \u2013 45 \u2013 60 minutes<br \/>\n2<sup>nd<\/sup> grade \u2013 1 \u00bd hours<br \/>\n3<sup>rd<\/sup> grade \u2013 2 hours<br \/>\n7<sup>th<\/sup> grade \u2013 about 4 hours<br \/>\nHigh school 5- 6 hours.<\/p>\n<p>Note \u2013 30 minutes does not mean 30 minutes straight; please include break time.<\/p>\n<p>One other note \u2013 for the junior high and high schooler, much of the school work will be done independently; i.e. you will not be sitting with your student for 4-6 hours but will be available to answer any questions and provide guidance as necessary.<\/p>\n<p>So, what does my kindergartener do for the rest of the day?\u00a0 Easy answer \u2013 PLAY and also participate with you in your homemaker activities around the home.\u00a0 (CHOH will address that question in a forthcoming article.)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How much instruction time is needed to teach my children at home?
