{"id":1253,"date":"2022-07-13T23:20:21","date_gmt":"2022-07-14T09:20:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.christianhomeschoolersofhawaii.org\/?page_id=1253"},"modified":"2022-08-23T17:19:15","modified_gmt":"2022-08-24T03:19:15","slug":"mapping-out-the-high-school-years","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/mail.christianhomeschoolersofhawaii.org\/index.php\/mapping-out-the-high-school-years\/","title":{"rendered":"Mapping Out the High School Years"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><strong>Mapping Out the High School Years <\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>It\u2019s natural to have some concerns about homeschooling through high school.\u00a0 After all, this may be the last formal years of schooling at home.\u00a0 Praise the Lord, we have a mighty God.\u00a0 He has provided for you and will continue to provide for His people.\u00a0 He is a good and faithful God.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Psalm 16:8 <\/strong>says, \u201cI have set the Lord always before me.\u00a0 Because He is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>First, take time to pray<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Ask the Lord for wisdom as you and your teen prepare for high school.\u00a0 Trust Him to provide and even fill in the gaps.\u00a0 Include your teen in the discussion.\u00a0\u00a0 Here are some things to consider.\\<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What knowledge and skills do I want my teen to have upon graduating from high school?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Granted there are the academic skills in writing, computation, logic, communication, research, bible study. <strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Just as valuable are the non-academic skills such as CPR, financial management, home economics, computer skills, time management, study skills<strong>.\u00a0 <\/strong>The list is not exhaustive because learning is for a lifetime.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What values do I want my adult children to live by?\u00a0 What principles should govern their decision making? \u00a0What character traits do I want to see in my teen?\u00a0 How best to instill these principles and develop these traits?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>As Christian parents, we desire foremost that our children trust Jesus Christ as their Savior and commit their lives to obey and serve Him.\u00a0 We desire to see fruit in their lives.\u00a0 We can only teach and explain so much; head knowledge must reach the heart and that is the work of the Holy Spirit.\u00a0 We must model Christ before them and pray the Lord does His sanctifying work.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What are my child\u2019s interests and strengths?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>What does he enjoy doing or reading or even talking about?\u00a0 How does she spend her leisure time?<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes interests and strengths go hand in hand.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Does your child whip through math lessons? You may want to continue higher level math courses and consider a future in engineering or accounting.<\/li>\n<li>Does your teen have an eye for design? Consider art classes or mentoring with a graphic artist or taking special classes.<\/li>\n<li>Are you sometimes exasperated with your child because of his argumentation skills; perhaps speech and debate should be one of his electives.<\/li>\n<li>If your teen has started a home business or is interested in doing so, consider mentoring with a businessman or taking an accounting course?<\/li>\n<li>If your child has no definite interests \u2013 which is not uncommon for a 14 or 15 year old \u2013 include the basic courses to provide a good foundation for launching off in different directions. Let your teen to do volunteer work to explore different fields \u2013 it may spark an interest.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>What are some areas of weakness?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Weaknesses are not always academic.\u00a0 Perhaps it\u2019s a character trait or related to time management or communication skills, or study and problem solving skills.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever the situation, determine if this is something that needs to be addressed and if so, put together a plan.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>And the big question, what are my teen\u2019s post high school goals? <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Although many teens are not sure what their future plans are, maybe your teen has some interest in the \u2026<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Military<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>It is a worthy endeavor to serve our country and protect the freedoms of our nation.<\/p>\n<p>In 2012 and 2014, Congress amended the National Defense Authorization Act, which clarifies that homeschoolers may enlist in any branch of the military \u2013 Army, Navy, Air Force, National Guard, Marines, or Coast Guard \u2013 just like any graduate from a public or private school.<\/p>\n<p>If your child plans to enlist, the homeschool graduate must<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Show verification of compliance with state homeschool law in Hawaii, i.e. the Notice of Intent or the DOE Form 4140.<\/li>\n<li>Have a high school diploma issued by the parent; DO NOT take the GED or get an online diploma.<\/li>\n<li>Submit a high school transcript from the homeschool \u2013 curriculum should parallel the traditional high school curriculum.<\/li>\n<li>Be homeschooled for the final 9 months of the academic year.<\/li>\n<li>Please verify this information with the recruiter.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In planning the high school years:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Plan a strong academic program, reflected in the high school transcript.<\/li>\n<li>Keep good records.<\/li>\n<li>Participate in extracurricular activities, e.g. sports, speech and debate clubs, Civil Air Patrol, Naval Sea Cadets, Junior ROTC, etc. community service, volunteer work, leadership programs.<\/li>\n<li>Maintain good health and physical fitness.<\/li>\n<li>Develop and demonstrate good character \u2013 leadership, responsibility, respect for authority, discipline.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Workforce<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Perhaps your high schooler is interested in entering the workforce whether in the public marketplace or from the home.\u00a0 Take some time with your teen to explore different fields based on strengths and interests.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Consider career testing.<\/li>\n<li>Google jobs that require a high school diploma but not a college degree.<\/li>\n<li>Research what training, certification, or licensing is required. Although a four year college degree may not be required, certification or licensing requirements may still be needed to run a child care business, to become a doula or a massage therapist, restaurant cook, or insurance agent, etc.\u00a0 The list is endless.<\/li>\n<li>Be sure to look into Hawaii\u2019s state law regarding owning a small business.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For the high school years,<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Consider a high school plan with the core academic subjects.<\/li>\n<li>Keep good records.<\/li>\n<li>Electives could focus around areas of interest and other life skills \u2013 computer skills, communication skills, resume writing, job interview, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>College<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>College is a common path for many high school students.\u00a0 But it does not have to be a traditional college path.\u00a0 College does not have to be in the form of a brick and mortar education; you may want to consider distance learning.\u00a0 Your high schooler can also begin at a two year community college (even while in high school) before transferring to a four year degree program.<\/p>\n<p>When mapping out the high school years,<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Plan a strong academic program.<\/li>\n<li>Keep good records.<\/li>\n<li>Participate in extracurricular activities, e.g. sports, speech and debate clubs, Civil Air Patrol, Naval Sea Cadets, Junior ROTC, etc. community service, volunteer work, leadership programs.<\/li>\n<li>Develop and demonstrate good character \u2013 leadership, responsibility, respect for authority, discipline.<\/li>\n<li>Consider AP or dual enrollment courses (taken at a local college or through distance learning).<\/li>\n<li>Continue strong academic classes even during the senior year \u2013 don\u2019t slack off.<\/li>\n<li>Consider taking classes from an outside source \u2013 e.g. community college or online class \u2013 so your teen is evaluated by an instructor other than you, the parent.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Investigate colleges<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If your teen has a particular college in mind, visit their website to learn the number and types of credits required for admission.<\/li>\n<li>If you are not sure about which college, begin investigating requirements of different colleges to help determine the number and type of high school courses that should be included in your student\u2019s program.<\/li>\n<li>Be aware that some colleges are very academic and your high schooler may need a pretty rigorous high school program.
