{"id":1057,"date":"2021-07-26T21:58:19","date_gmt":"2021-07-27T07:58:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/christianhomeschoolersofhawaii.org\/?page_id=1057"},"modified":"2021-08-26T16:36:03","modified_gmt":"2021-08-27T02:36:03","slug":"homeschool-why","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/mail.christianhomeschoolersofhawaii.org\/index.php\/homeschool-why\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Homeschool?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over 2 million children are homeschooled in the United States \u2013 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1073\" src=\"https:\/\/christianhomeschoolersofhawaii.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/m2i8i8G6H7i8b1m2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"199\" height=\"126\" \/>and that number continues to grow.\u00a0 Why would parents choose to educate their children at home?\u00a0 The reasons are many and they generally fall into 4 basic categories \u2013 academic, social, physical, and spiritual.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Academic \u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Homeschooling is like tutoring, giving parents the flexibility to provide personalized or individualized instruction to their children.\u00a0 Parents can teach to their child\u2019s interests and use teaching methods that are appropriate for their child \u2013 a good factor for motivation, learning, and retention.\u00a0 Lessons can be adapted to the child\u2019s strengths and weaknesses as needed for a gifted child or a struggling learner.<\/p>\n<p>Research by Brian Ray, Ph.D. of the National Home Education Research Institute (NHERI) (March 23, 2020 Research Facts on Homeschooling) cites<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Home educated students typically score 15 to 30 percentile points above public school students on standardized academic achievement tests (public school average is the 50<sup>th<\/sup> percentile with scores ranging from 1 to 99).<\/li>\n<li>Homeschool students score above average on achievement tests regardless of their parents\u2019 level of formal education or their family\u2019s household income.<\/li>\n<li>Homeschool students typically score above average on the SAT and ACT college admission tests<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Social<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>A question often asked is, \u201cWhat about socialization?\u201d\u00a0 Homeschooling actually provides a wonderful social environment.\u00a0 Parents can influence their child\u2019s character as they seek to build strong family and sibling relationships.\u00a0 The family unit protects the child from bullying and undue peer influence and pressure while also encouraging social relationships with people of all ages including young children, peers, adults, and senior citizens.\u00a0 Families can also serve together in community and volunteer work.<\/p>\n<p>Research by Dr. Brian Ray of <a href=\"https:\/\/nheri.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NHERI<\/a> (March 23, 2020 Research Facts on Homeschooling) found<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Homeschool students are doing well on measures for \u201cpeer interaction, self-concept, leadership skills, family cohesion, participation in community service, and self-esteem.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Physical<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Recently, safety has become one of the key factors in a family\u2019s decision to homeschool.
